After their first escapade in the mobile phone market with the original xpPhone, Chinese manufacturer ITG the went on to created a version with Windows 7, or Windows 8, the xpPhone 2.

Windows 8 is still in developer preview, so an upgrade is planned for the xpPhone 2 either shortly after its January launch or in line with it.

Unlike most smart phones, this is a real desktop operating system, and originally the device has no physical keyboard and so usage, I can imagine will be a bit like using LogMeIn Ignition on an Android or iPhone device.

The handset itself isn’t slow, it will be powered by an Intel Atom X530 processor clocked at 1.6 GHz along with 2 GB RAM, unheard of on mobile handsets.

The mobile will have a 4.3-inch display and is compatible with Windows 7 and Windows 8, a solid state drive with 112 GB of storage and measures only 140mm x 73mm x 17.5mm.

It’s not going to rival the Nexus or the iPhone, but if you are looking for a true desktop replacement that fits in your pocket, it may just be usable. Just don’t expect finesse.

Acer’s first Windows Phone was the first device to be displayed, followed by a pink robust and waterproof mobile phone from Fujitsu.

ZTE, a massively emerging brand int he UK also had it’s first WP7 device on stage, but unfortunately it was overshadowed by a Galaxy S II-like device from Samsung running Windows Phone Mango.

Today Microsoft are getting ready for today, their big day, the day they launch the revision of Windows Phone 7 that will answer all of the issues that early adopters are facing.

Mango, as it’s known, is said to be something special but so far details are very light.

CEO Steve Ballmer has came forward with a mention of 500 new features which are said to be coming in the upgrade.

Rumours of new handsets are starting to trickle out too, with “details of OEMs and carriers” to be announced at the event. Reckon Nokia will have a part to play?

This unholy union looks set to produce some of the finest smartphone technology of the new era. See the selection of their finest works to date at the Dialaphone website.

We’ll be giving you the low down on Windows 7 once all the information is in and we can aggregate a concise single article from it, however to wet your appetite today the first official screens of Windows Mobile 7 Series’ marketplace have leaked.

It’s clear that < Windows Mobile 6.5 apps won’t work on 7, and so this new Marketplace runs independently of what you can access on Windows Mobile 6.5. As you can see from the image above, the Microsoft Zune-inspired interface continues into the Marketplace where you can filter into apps, games, music, and podcasts.

Here we can see what happens when go into applications. From here you can drill into featured, popular, and new.

One of the first bits of Windows Mobile 7 news to hit here, this time from an Engadget source. It turns out the Russian, Eldar Murtazin of Mobile-Review, has got his hands on one of the first examples of Windows Mobile 7.

Here’s what he’s saying:

The OS has been built on scratch, and none of the old WinMo 6.x apps worked. There’s “a lot of horizontal movements, a lot of additional info by clicks… for WM users it will be a great step ahead. For market it’s a copycat of Android 2.1/2.2 or iPhone.

Still too early to tell whats going on really, I can’t imagine Microsoft will be totally excluding previous app capability to it would be a sensible assumption that they will be offering a two-tier platform, perhaps pushing a new more elegant programming language for Windows 7 onwards.

Article Content:
The HTC HD2 - the poster boy for Windows Phone done right and a huge seller here on Omio – seems to have been future-proofed in development, with Microsoft hinting that the touchscreen wonder will be in line to get an upgrade to Windows Mobile 7.

Some effusive quotes from Greg Sullivan regarding Windows Mobile 7 and the phones that will embrace it in an interview with Betanews make it sound inevitable…

“Our fragmentation issue is primarily around screen resolutions and assuming a minimum CPU and storage. So it has been a little bit challenging, because that choice, that flexibility, that freedom that people have to build any kind of device and use any kind of device: touch, non-touch, keyboard, soft key, has required a little bit extra effort in some cases for developers to target apps that run across a wide array of devices,” Sullivan said.

“But the HD2 is a great early example of our new approach…We’ve got capacitive and multi-touch support in a Windows Phone, and that’s because we did the platform work while working very closely with HTC to do the hardware/software integration.”

“We’re going to continue investing in the user experience, and the legacy pocket PC 1999 UI that still kind of shows up if you drill down pretty deep? that’s another thing that’s changed.”

So, less Windows phones in the future, but ones which will work well with Windows Mobile 7 and without that archaic interface.

It seems like the HD2 marked the start of something big, but with murmurs that Microsoft’s new mobile operating system won’t arrive until 2011, perhaps the HD3 will be a more suitable home by then?

———————
