The HTC HD2 is a big screen in your pocket: 4.3 inches of high–resolution touch cinema, yet housed in an amazingly skinny shell. It is the world’s first capacitive touch technology to run under Windows Mobile 6.5 to be precise.

Also for the first time in Windows, HTC has allied the touchscreen with its HTC Sense concept: customising the HD2 with favourite apps on the home screen. It is undoubtedly impressive and user–friendly, with a logical layout and many one–touch operations to watch, browse and flip through your stuff.

YouTube user JDMiPhoner managed to snag his new HD2 at a Vancouver, WA Walmart a few days ahead of its March 24th street date.

Article Content:
Not the most noted name in the manufacturing and selling of mobile handsets, Acer have announced a range of high end smartphone products at this years Mobile World Congress that are worth noting. Running on either Android or Windows Mobile, these devices deliver high end specification and serve to further enhance Acer’s growing reputation.

The first of the two Android devices is the Acer beTouch E400. Running on Android 2.1, the beTouch E400 has a large, 3.2 inch resistive touchscreen, and the Android operating system has been tweaked with the Acer UI. The E400 has a built in GPS receiver with aGPS support and includes a digital compass. The beTouch is a well connected handset, offering standard HSDPA at 3.6 Mbps and HSUPA at 384 kbps, and there is also WiFi and Bluetooth onboard.

A capable media device, the handset has a stereo FM radio and full featured music player, and there is a 3.5mm audio output jack. Messaging is covered with support for multiple email accounts, and the Pocket Office application for editing and viewing attachments comes pre-installed. Imaging seems a bit weak on the phone, in comparison with other recently announced phones, with a 3.2 Megapixel camera on board, it remains to be seen whether it provides acceptable pictures. The beTouch E400 should be available to market during April.

The second Android device has a slightly lower specification than the E400. The Acer beTouch E110 is smaller and lighter, and includes a 2.8 inch TFT resistive touchscreen display. It also runs on an older version of Android, version 1.5, it is not yet clear if the device can be upgraded after purchase to a more recent version. There is still the same 3.2 Megapixel camera, but whilst the E110 supports 3G+ Mobile Broadband like the E400, the E110 does not offer WiFi. Other features on the E110 seem to match its big brother, so we find support for social networking, multiple email accounts, and the Pocket Office application for viewing and editing email attachments. The Acer beTouch E110 should be available to buy from March.

Moving over to Windows Mobile now, Acer has two devices running on Windows Mobile 6.5.3, the first we are going to look at is the Acer neoTouch P400. The device appears to be a Windows Mobile version of the beTouch E400, so the spec list is pretty similar. The same HVGA 3.2 inch touch display is included, and the P400 also runs on the same processor. Support for GPS with aGPS is included, as is a digital compass, and there is even the same 3.2 Megapixel camera. Connection options on the P400 include Bluetooth, HSPA for high speed uploads and downloads, and the P400 includes WiFi 802.11 b/g in its arsenal. The device can handle multiple email accounts as well as push email, and the built in document viewer also allows you to edit email attachments. The neoTouch P400 is expected to be available from May.

Lastly we have the Acer neoTouch P300, a smart looking Windows Mobile device, with a slide out QWERTY keyboard. The QWERTY keys are illuminated to help with typing in poor light conditions, and there is a strong emphasis on productivity and messaging. The Pocket Office application allows you to work on the road, and the device can handle multiple email accounts and also offers push email. Social networking is tightly focussed on the phone, and connectivity is well covered, with support for WiFi, HSDPA, and Bluetooth. As we know, all work and no play is no fun at all; to cover this, the neoTouch P300 includes a full media player, and there is a 3.2mm audio jack, plus support for Bluetooth connectivity. The camera, as with the previous handsets, is a 3.2 Megapixel imaging device, the handset also includes GPS with aGPS support for accessing location based services. The neoTouch P300 is expected to be available in March.

This is a strong set of handsets from Acer, and although the name may not be big in mobile phones, with handsets like these that may be set to change.

———————

We love HTC here at MyGreatPhone. They are one of few manufacturers to continuously churn out quality handset after quality handset. They also arn’t fraid to cross the borders and embrace all platforms. They even go so far as to try and create some unity in the UX for us with their fantastic Sense UI and Touchflo Interfaces which get better generation after generation.

The great news is, 3 news super quality handsets are on their way. The HTC Desire, the HTC HD Mini and the HTC Legend (ordered above) each of which has some fantastically appealing specs and are heading to the UK very soon.

HTC Desire Specifications:

T-Mobile will be carrying all three handsets from April 12th it’s believed with subsidised handset pricing.

Following in the footsteps of the Xperia X1 and X2, Sony Ericsson have announced the forthcoming release of the Aspen, the third Windows Mobile powered device from the Swedish/Japanese manufacturer. The device is expected to release during Q2 2010, and in some markets will also be known as the Sony Ericsson Faith. Aimed at the business market, the Aspen packs in a whole host of top end features designed to keep you in touch on the go.

The Aspen comes under the now familiar Greenheart banner, a range of handsets from Sony Ericsson that deliver top end mobile technology utilising eco friendly materials. This means the majority of the device is constructed from recycled material, whilst the packaging itself is kept to an absolute minimum. Also, you will not find a manual in the box; this will be stored on the phone in .pdf format. A useful tip for this is when you get your phone, copy the .pdf file to your PC, because if you need to access the manual and your phone is not working, it can be a bit of a pain having to hunt for the manual online. Another element of the Greenheart ethos is using waterborne paint on the handset, which has better environmental credentials.

Click here to view the embedded video.

The Sony Ericsson Aspen is a candybar style device, looking similar in design to a traditional BlackBerry, or Nokia E71. There is a full, four row, QWERTY keyboard on the handset, above which sit the menu Navi Key, soft option keys and call send/end keys. The display on the device is a resistive touchscreen, TFT, measuring 2.4 inches across and supporting up to 16 million colours. The fact that the QVGA display is touchscreen is a real bonus, allowing you to interact with the device either via the keypad or directly through the screen, and as the screen is a resistive display, it will work with a stylus and there is support for handwriting recognition included. As with most modern phones, the display has an auto rotate feature, which comes into its own when using the device for web browsing, and the user interface includes support for the Sony Ericsson panels, found previously on the X1 and X2.

The Aspen is a well connected phone, with quad band GSM support for solid worldwide coverage. Data transfer on the phone is handled via HSPA, for mobile broadband speed downloads and uploads on the phone, plus there is also support for WiFi 802.11b/g. This is all backed up with Class 10 EDGE and GPRS, and the device also supports Bluetooth 2.1, with A2DP. For connecting to a PC, the handset uses a Micro USB connector, and onboard storage sits at 100MB. This can be expanded via MicroSD memory cards, with the Aspen able to handle up to 16GB. The basic retail package ships with a 4GB memory card.

All the major messaging suites are supported on the Aspen, to further enhance the business credentials of this device. As well as email and push email, there is support for instant messaging, as well as onboard applications for Skype, YouTube, Facebook and Twitter. The Aspen also includes Pocket Office, allowing you to view a variety of office documents on the phone, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote and .pdf files. But the Aspen isn’t all work, and as we’d hope for on a high spec handset, there is a full media player included, with support for WMA, MP3 and AAC audio files, plus WMV, MP4, H.264 and H.263 video files, and Sony Ericsson have also included a stereo FM radio with RDS support.

Imaging on the handset is capably managed by a point ‘n’ shoot 3.2 Megapixel camera, which has support for smart contrast, and is also enabled for video recording. A GPS receiver is built into the phone, with support for aGPS included, and the device will ship with Google Maps pre-installed.

All round the Sony Ericsson Aspen is a solid device, and has a lot to offer the business user on the move. But more than that, the device would be equally comfortable for someone who likes to keep in touch via social networking and email, all services well supported on the device. Whether the Aspen has enough to hold some of the limelight for itself against some of the handset we expect to be announced this month, though, remains to be seen.

One of the first bits of Windows Mobile 7 news to hit here, this time from an Engadget source. It turns out the Russian, Eldar Murtazin of Mobile-Review, has got his hands on one of the first examples of Windows Mobile 7.

Here’s what he’s saying:

The OS has been built on scratch, and none of the old WinMo 6.x apps worked. There’s “a lot of horizontal movements, a lot of additional info by clicks… for WM users it will be a great step ahead. For market it’s a copycat of Android 2.1/2.2 or iPhone.

Still too early to tell whats going on really, I can’t imagine Microsoft will be totally excluding previous app capability to it would be a sensible assumption that they will be offering a two-tier platform, perhaps pushing a new more elegant programming language for Windows 7 onwards.

Gaming has been a big part of the success of the iPhone. There is a huge choice of games available, from some of the leading games manufacturers. This popularity of mobile gaming hasn’t been lost on Microsoft, who are in a prime position given their position in the gaming market with the Xbox console. The ideal option would be to combine the two and port Xbox games to the Windows mobile platform, and it seems Microsoft are looking to do just this. A job opportunity is currently being advertised on the Microsoft website, for a Principal Program Manager, with the job spec offering this information:

Xbox LIVE involves a lot more than building software. It’s about changing the way people have fun, interact and live. Help us create and deliver the most advanced online entertainment service on the planet. At Xbox LIVE, we’re accelerating the trend towards connected, social interactive entertainment by designing incredibly rich, multi-platform game and community experiences. We’re connecting players via the LIVE services on new devices beyond the console. We need a Principle Program Manager who can help drive the platform and bring Xbox LIVE enabled games to Windows Mobile. This person will focus specifically on what makes gaming experiences “LIVE Enabled” through aspects such as avatar integration, social interactions, and multi-screen experiences.

If you fancy applying for the job, you can do so by following the link here, but it would involve relocation to the US.

It takes a long time to produce a top end mobile phone, with many months passing from first concept drawings to final production. Any leading manufacturer worth its salt will have a roadmap of handsets projected 6 – 12 months in advance, and that information is jealously guarded to avoid leaking information to rival manufacturers. Occasionally though, certain information does leak out, be it by a mis-placed slide at a presentation or deliberately placed info supplied by the manufacturer themselves to generate internet chatter and interest in forth-coming devices. How the information leaked about the HTC roadmap came about, I’m not too sure, but it does give us a chance to look ahead to devices that will be on the market and in our pockets in 2010.

The devices mentioned are all either Windows Mobile or Android. Of the three Windows Mobile, two we currently know the code name for, the Photon and the Trophy. The third, Tera, has a flip up style keyboard that doesn’t look too different to the Nokia N97.

The remaining devices are all powered by Android, and it looks to be a strong line-up. Firstly, we have Buzz, an up market style Tattoo device, with changeable back covers, followed by Tide, a traditional candy bar style handset, with keypad. Will be interesting to see if this type of device really opens Android out to a wider audience. Next we have the Salsa, which has a form factor similar to the Nokia E72, with full QWERTY keyboard, and then the HTC Legend, the upgrade to the Hero. The Legend replaces the trackball found on the Hero with an optical trackpad, and comes with a 5.0 Megapixel camera and large, 3.2 inch display. Rounding off the forthcoming devices is the awesome Bravo, a handset that could break Android into the leading multimedia smartphone section. The Bravo promises HD (720p) video capture, plus 5.0 Megapixel camera with LED flash, a 3.7 inch display, and powered by a 1GHz Snapdragon processor.

Certainly a promising line-up, which just reinforces the view that next year is going to be all about Android.

I’m happy to announce today that the fantastic HTC HD2 is available today from Vodafone UK.

It’s free on £35 and above tariffs over a 24 month contract and on £40 and above on 18 months.

At 4.3 inches and capacitive it’s sure to be a winner. It uses the WVGA 480 x 800 resolution for it’s screen (wallpapers here) and houses the fantastic 1Ghz snapdragon processor.

What makes me even happier is that it’s another top end, top tech smartphone running Windows Mobile 6.5, giving a little more life to the slightly flagging business OS. Unfortunately our US readers can’t quite get hold of this handset quite yet but stay tuned we’ll let you know when.

We’ve got lot of deals on the HD2 on both Orange and O2 which start at only £26 a month on a 24 month contract beating Vodafone’s in store pricing hands down.

Buy the HD2 from our online store.

Here’s a nice video overview so you can see what it’s all about.

Click here to view the embedded video.
