Facebook seem to be following closely in Google‘s footsteps, buying up small start-ups left right an centre.

A few weeks ago messenger client Beluga was the target, today it is Snaptu.

The acquisition for an undisclosed sun (read smillions) will allow Facebook to target the developing world where feature phones are still dominating and polyphonic ringtones are considered a positive selling point.

Snaptu actually operates from London but has offices in Silicon Valley. Earlier this year the company delivered the Facebook for feature phones app.

Snaptu said:

We soon decided that working as part of the Facebook team offered the best opportunity of accelerating the pace of our product development.

Other acquisitions this year include Pursuit and tech company Rel8tion.

Today, I randomly checked twitter to find a very interesting post on www.tuaw.com in relation to Apple – a post that immediately piqued my interest, and had my ears tuned to any frequency that would broadcast the information I was attempting to obtain.

That’s right, fellow MacHeads, it seems as if there is a strong possibility that this years WWDC (World Wide Developer’s Conference) will be on or around the date of June 5, 2011.

This comes hot on the heels of an observation made by www.AppleBitch.com who spotted that the Moscone Center had empty slots in its schedule for the dates of June 5 to June 9 due to what seems to be reserved for “Corporate Meetings”. AppleBitch.com also states that in the past, similar bookings have represented the WWDC. They also go on to state that there are single-day events in May and June also attributed to “Corporate Bookings”, so these dates may or may not be reserved for Apple events and/or product announcements.

As also referenced in www.tuaw.com’s article, last years WWDC focused mainly on iOS and iDevice upgrades, releases, and features. This year, it is expected that it will have a bit more attention to Mac products, such as the release of OSX 10.7 (“Lion”). I personally think that the Mac AppStore is going to have a lot to do with this year’s WWDC, what do you think?

Article Content:
Google have released an update for it’s popular, and almost necessary GMail application for Android mobile phones.

This update is available for people to upgrade to now by simply checking the Android Market and downloading the update once it shows. This is for 2.2 FroYo right now.

New features include support for the new Priority Inbox and new Inline replies.

Check below for the official scoop taken from the Official Google Blog:

Link: Google Mobile Blog
From Google Blog Website

When we first released Gmail in Android Market back in September, we said that you’d be getting new stuff faster, and we meant it. After getting thousands of comments on that release, we made a bunch of updates based on your feedback and today we’re launching Gmail for Android 2.3.2.
Priority Inbox

First of all, you told us that you love Priority Inbox and expect much better support for it on your phone. Now you can see important messages in a new Priority Inbox view.

This view includes all important messages in your inbox, regardless of whether you’ve read them or not. You can archive and delete conversations or mark them unimportant from there. You’ll notice the importance markers you’re used to seeing in the desktop version of Gmail, and you can also change a conversation’s importance using the menu. To switch between inboxes or labels, try tapping on the current label.

Ever wanted to know that you got an important message without taking your phone out of your pocket? Now you can set up your phone to notify, vibrate, or ring on just your new important mail (check out Menu > Settings > Priority Inbox).

While Priority Inbox on your Android phone doesn’t have all the features offered in the desktop version of Gmail, we think this is a good start and plan to add even more functionality moving forward.

Improved Compose

Since our last Market update, we adopted a few features related to composing messages from the desktop version of Gmail. Many of you asked for a better way to switch between replying to the sender to replying to all. Now, you can easily switch between reply, reply all, and forward while composing your response.

If you moved to Gmail from another webmail provider and want to continue to send email from that address, now you can send from any address you’ve configured in the desktop version of Gmail. In addition, you can now respond to messages in-line.

You won’t need to wait for Gingerbread to get these updates. This version of the Gmail app works for Android 2.2 (Froyo) and newer releases in most countries. (Not sure if your device is running the right version? Check here.) Get the update from Android Market (just scan the QR code below, or click here if you’re on a phone) and check out the new Gmail. And don’t forget to send us your feedback from within the new version of the app (from your Inbox: Menu > More > About > Feedback).

Firstly sorry for the lack of updates over the weekend, I’ve been hard at work rebranding and modernising the new MyGreatiPhone.com website and forums (go check it out if you’re an iPhoner)

Now over to the exciting stuff, 2.4 is leaking, or should I say dribbling out of the waffle cone that’s keeping it a secret and is pretty much guarenteed to be called Ice Cream.

The naming convention follows Google‘s front yard sweet toothed previous names and at the moment details of what it’s real focus is is hairy. What we do know is that 3.0 is specifically for tablets, and so if Google continue at this rate, are we nearly half was through Android as we know it?

Now give me 2.3 on my Desire Z

Nielsen has released some new data for the past six months, and it shows that Android’s dominating growth is continuing.

From June, 2010 to November, 2010, Android was responsible for 40% of all new smartphone acquisitions, a far faster rate than both Apple and RIM.

In the past six months Android has been steadily creeping up and has now almost pushed past RIM for second place in the overall U.S. smartphone marketshare. They are now only about 3% behind Apple, which has seen little growth in recent months.

Android is expected to surpass both RIM and Apple in the coming months.

We don’t know what exactly they’re going to say, but Rovio, creators of Angry Birds, has some news for us regarding that Angry Birds on Windows Phone 7.

In a recent Tweet, Rovio wants to share their ideas (possibly in Redmond) on bringing the popular game to the new OS.

December the 11th looks to be the day for the launch.

They’re not going to announce they’re not supporting it, with 8 million iPhone sales and 2 million Android downloads in it’s first week.

I must admit, I’m now an AB addict of Droid, so am happy that our WP7 brethren will get the same enjoyment.

Samsung is set to back Windows Phone 7 in a big way by making Windows Phone 7 its number one OS, with Android at second place in it’s line-up and their own Bada OS in a distant third.

The graph above, reportedly from Samsung themselves, confirms the story that for 2011 Samsung will put Windows Phone on 63% of its smartphone releases. Android follows in second with just 32% and Bada at a tiny 6%.

Are Samsung becoming the no.1 backers because no other manufacturer is yet to really commit at that level, or is there some kind of exclusivity going on? Only time will tell.

Dell’s official Facebook account confirms that Android 2.2 AKA Froyo will be out on the Dell Streak this month.

Right now this is just for the UK, and in a staggered approach the upgrade will be sent Over The Air to other localities within Europe.

Although that’s the official path to upgrade it has been reported that Dell directed a number of Streak owners to the website pictured above. That “Continue with Update” button reportedly didn’t work and the website has since been taken down, possibly because of the leak, it seems that Dell’s considering the idea of letting users directly download Android 2.2 themselves.
