Equally a gesture of goodwill as it is to show off the wares in Samsung’s App Store, EA are giving away driving sim Need For Speed: Shift for free to Samsung Wave owners.

A limited time offer of a mere 1.2 million downloads, Need For Speed: Shift features some of the world’s hottest pieces of automotive engineering tearing up the track around the globe in exciting locales including Dubai, Italy and even the heart of foggy London town.

Also one of the most visually impressive games available on the platform, Need For Speed’s full 3D environments and blistering speed capably demonstrates that Samsung’s bada OS can really hold its own when it comes to mobile gaming – a major point when placed alongside the iPhone’s impressive output and a real plus when compared to the mixed quality of Android titles.

Hit the NOS and drift over here to the Samsung App Store to get it. Those who aren’t already a member need to sign up here to get involved.

Korean device manufacturer Samsung aims to ship as many as 10 million of their flagship Wave S8500 device in 2010, marking a concerted push for the first handset to run on their open source ‘Bada’ operating system.

The Samsung Wave offers a revamped user experience based on their proprietary TouchWiz interface, and is also the first to sport their new super-AMOLED display technology, enhancing screen brightness and fidelity whilst reducing glare from natural light.

Dr. Justin Hong, the platform’s lead and VP of Samsung Mobile, announced their intentions to introduce Bada-powered devices to even more consumers:

“Wave is the first bada phone, and subsequent mass market phones will follow. Bada has the potential to deliver huge volumes straight away because Samsung is now the world’s number two handset maker.”

“We want to push feature phones into the mass market, and get feature phone users into smartphones“.

The Wave is marked for an April launch, and will be available for purchase in more than 50 countries by May 2010.

The Bada platform will also tie with the manufacturer’s download portal dubbed ‘Samsung Apps,’ – currently in trial on three of their Windows Mobile devices – where they predict to offer at least 1,000 applications by year’s end.

With Bada software development kits to roll out publicly in March, the allure of an application platform for the lucrative mid-range sector should see many developers making the leap, whilst others are fearful that another open source operating system could fracture the mobile market yet further.

Samsung caused a bit of a stir recently, with the announcement of a proprietary smartphone platform they were planning to launch, called Bada, which is designed as a complete platform running high performance native applications, services and products. The initial news was rather coolly received, with many wondering just where yet another smartphone platform would fit in a crowded market. After all, we already have Windows, Symbian, then Android, LiMo, then there is the iPhone and BlackBerry, which whilst not being strictly smartphones allows installation of third party apps to increase the overall functionality of the device. Regardless, Samsung obviously see value in the Bada OS, and at this year’s Mobile World Congress they have officially announced the Samsung Wave S8500, and as a first product it is certainly setting a high standard for future Bada devices.

Highlights of the Wave are the inclusion of the latest version Bluetooth, 3.0, plus support for the latest WiFi 802.11 b/g/n. The device has a large AMOLED touchscreen display, and other features include GPS, 5.0 Megapixel camera with HD video recording, and support for DivX and XviD video files. There will be plenty of memory on offer for media storage, with the Wave offering two options of either 2GB or 8GB internal capacity, which can be expanded with Micro SD memory cards.

But the Bada running Wave S8500 isn’t everything announced from Samsung at the MWC. We also have the Samsung i8520, which is an Android device that has a top feature set and then some. The display on the phone is a super 3.7 inch WVGA AMOLED touchscreen, with a scratch resistant surface. On top of this, the i8520 offers a high quality 8.0 megapixel camera, which is also enabled for HD video recording. The i8520 has a large internal memory capacity, and also supports Micro SD memory cards up to 32GB in size. Data connectivity is well covered, with the inclusion of HSPA high speed downloads and uploads, and also WiFi. The media player on the device also offers native support for DivX and XviD video formats. But the real gem hidden away in the spec list of the i8520 is a built in projector! Unfortunately there may be a bit of a delay for those who would want to get their hands on this device, as it isn’t due to launch until Q3 2010. But it is certainly one worth waiting for.

Other handsets announced by Samsung that may not grab the headlines quite like the Wave or the i8520 include a couple more handsets under the ‘Monte’ name, the C3200 and E2550. The C3200 is a straight forward candybar design phone, with a 2.0 inch display, and very light at under 80g. The device has a 2.0 Megapixel camera, and also offers a 3.5mm audio jack for music playback. The E2550 is a slider style device, with a 1.3 Megapixel camera, built in GPS and a stereo FM radio with FM recording. Both of these devices show Samsung’s commitment to offering a range of devices across the board for every type of user, and reinforces Samsung’s position as the main challenger to Nokia. Lastly we have the Samsung B3410W which is a WiFi enabled version of the B3410. The B3410W has a QVGA touchscreen, and has a slide out QWERTY keypad, and a 2.0 Megapixel camera. As with many new devices, social network integration is complete, allowing you to keep in touch with friends and family via your favourite online service.

That’s the main update from Samsung on day 1 of the MWC. There may well be a few more surprises to come, but the headlining devices in this year’s early portfolio are undoubtedly the Wave and the i8520. We will bring in depth reviews on all of these new Samsung devices over the coming days.
