Proporta, our favourite case manufacturer, have just launched a new range with a difference. I’m not talking new colours here or an I before the name, I’m talking about a real difference, especially on the environment.

Proporta have launched their new Smart range, eco-friendly cases made from almost totally recycled materials. They class it as a sustainable product randge and what they are doing is really very clever.

The retail “packaging” in our Recycled Leather Case is made from bamboo and doubles-up as a tough, rigid lining to protect the screen of your device.

We’ve been sent two different “Smart” cases, both eco-friendly and both with the funky bamboo product hanger / protection plate. We’ll start with my favourite, the Hessian case.

Proporta Smart Hessian Case

The Hessian case looks original and stylish, we’re used to leather(ette) and coloured silicon or foam or other foreign feeling materials but there’s something really strangely nice about the feel of Hessian. It’s soft and strong and so makes for a really good material for a phone case. Perhaps it was the 6 years lugging 25kg bags of potatoes up a large hill working for a local butchers but that’s a different story.

While it’s obviously not going to provide huge amounts of drop or shock protection I don;t think that matters anymore. Most cases can’t really protect from a real life drop so what’s the point in trying to. Once people are educated enough to know their phones have to last the average person 18 months and cost usually about £400 at point of sale you either a) treat it like the valuable it is and and not drop or throw it or b) take out suitable insurance.

However what is often needed is protection from the pocket or desk itself. How many times have you put your keys in the same pocket, them remembering and frantically pulling out your phone hoping all the paint is still there. This case will protect you from that.

If you’re anything like me, your daily gadget requirements have grown to the extent that you now have a full size rucksack to carry everything around. Mobile Phones, MP3 players, Digital Camera, USB Flash Keys, HDD Enclosures, Cables and power supplies, the list just goes on and on. While it’s great to have a rucksack handy, it would be great if there was some kind of bag, created with gadgets and gadget organisation in mind which could alleviate the tediousnous of digging through the bottom of that big bag. Thankfully there could well be an answer, the Proporta Gadget Bag.

Lets get organised
The bag, aptly named the Proporta Gadget Bag, comes with a shoulder strap although looks and feels far more at home as an additional organisation and protection accessory for your rucksack than as an independent bag.

The Proporta Gadget Bag features a set of individual compartments that are zipped together to allow for quick access and separation. The bag consists of a main padded, folded bag and two exterior gadget bags. The padded lining of the main bag minimises the risk of scratching and the seperation of the extra bags allows you to ensure your HDD enclosure is never knocking around with your ipod etc. Overall, the gadget bag measures 26 x 21 x 6cm (10.4 x 8.5 x 2.6″)

Three Bags in One
The Proporta Gadget Bag is really three semi-separate bags. The largest bag sits to the rear and measures 26 x 21 x 3cm, giving you enough room for some of your larger items; PSP’s, HDD enclosures, books tangles of PSU’s etc.

To the front of this larger bag are a pair of front pockets. These front pockets, measuring 13 x 19 x 2cm each, can actually be removed completely from the main bag using their attaching zips. All three components are identical design style to the main bag.

You can totally remove the smaller bags and use them separately to the main bag. However, the Proporta Gadget Bag is designed to work at it’s best as one cohesive unit. The larger pocket looks like it may be the perfect size for the new Apple iPad and so this bag could be the perfect iPod / iPhone, iPad carry case for you Apple fanboys. Smaller items, like chargers and other little peripherals, will have no trouble fitting in the front pockets.

Easy Access to Pockets
Accessing the contents of the front two pockets is easy, thanks to the easily accessible zips. putting items in main, larger, compartment is just as easy, since the zipper to this is located around the edge of the main bag, and can be opened with or without the front pockets still attached.

Background

Owning a smart phone that you practically run your life on comes with risks. The MyGreat family of sites are mostly coordinated and administrated with a HTC Touch Pro 2. It’s a business phone, full of features running Windows mobile 6.5 (with some customised ROM action). Sure it’s no fancy-pants iPhone or whizzy Android handset but for a hardcore business user like myself it’s perfect (I live in outlook).

So after a while it dawns on you, what if I drop this? what if something breaks the screen? Will this actually last the 18 months I’ve got it for if I carry on using it this much? Common issues we all have, with all of our phones.

I set out to find a really decent case, and after some discussions with Proporta it seemed like the perfect start to our affiliate relationship that they sent over a case for review, and here it is:

Initial Impressions / Style

The case comes in a quality looking box, complete with Proporta branded rubber tab, and isn’t OTT in packaging. It has a clear plastic tray which holds the leather case sandwiched between two pieces of cardboard.

Once you’ve got the packaging opened the initial impressions are that of quality. The smell of leather is apparent and the cut, stitching and colouring all looks very very good.

Upon opening the case to see how the phone actually sits in I was surprised to find that it’s basically a hard plastic tray with 4 tabs which click over the rim of the back of the phone (where it separates from the front of the phone when sliding).

The tabs sit over with precision and cause no obstruction or damage at all.

Only the outside of the case is black leather (with white stitching), the inside is beautifully lined with grey pinstripe (like the suit I’m wearing now) and the inside of the cover is in tan leather with only a small cut-out to show the Proporta branding on the aluminium plate (more on that later).

While being very small they have enough strength to hold the phone very solidly and by pulling, shaking and mimicking a variety of real life instances the phone stayed put.

Functionality

The cover of the case folds over the screen and is secured by a magnetic popper and a leather latch. Unfortunately this latch covers the USB port so the case has to be opened to charge and use data connections, no great deal though.

The internal plastic tray has cut outs for the microphones, speakers, volume keys and buttons so functionality is not limited in any way through normal use. The tray is attached to the leather case with a screw and some adhesive, it’s not going anywhere.

I way able to take the case out of my pocket quickly enough to receive call etc., and while the case does ass bulk, it’s not so much to be annoying in jeans or loose trousers, or when holding the phone to make a call.

The tabs lie clear of the sliding mechanism, this means the screen can be slid up to make use of the keyboard without having to remove the phone from the case. A big bonus.

Protection

One of the key features of this case is it’s massive protection factor. Within the fold over screen protection is a solid aluminium plate which protects the screen. Nothing you are likely to smash into your leg during the day walking around will penetrate this plate, and to your large touch screen is permanently protected.

With the case closed there is a slight overhang, enough to protect the sides of the phone from any impact if dropped or knocked against something.

Conclusion

I can happily say that this is a very well thought out case, designed for and to be used by the professional who needs his phone as a business tool. It looks great with you case and portfolio and the added touches of pinstripe material and immaculate stitching adds to the appeal. This is not jut another cheap leatherette Chinese knock-off.

The protection surpasses anything I’ve seen in a phone case before, which is great, because that’s the point. If I have to carry something slightly larger, and perhaps slightly less convenient it need to benefit me, and this does, in style and protection.

The key bonus here though is the cleverly designed tray/tab holder which allows the phone to work just as it did before, with slider fully functional. This means this case can/and would be used daily without growing tired of having to take it out etc..

For our next case review we have another great offering from Proporta™, which is the Antimicrobial Soft Feel Silicon Case.

As with all the cases from Proporta™, no expense is spared with the packaging. You get the durable and magnetic card like box, that opens like a book to reveal the case inside.

This particular case falls into what I would call the “my favorite type of case” category, by this I mean having a case that still shows off the fact that I have an iPhone, and this case does it brilliantly. To start with it looks amazing, very sleek and professional. It feels just as good in your hand too.

The case is very flexible and fits the Phone 3G/3Gs like a glove, meaning there is no room for the case to slide about in leaving your iPhone nice and snug and secure.

As you can see on the back, you have this stylish looking pattern moulded into the case with the middle part of the pattern having a rough texture to it, providing the grip needed to keep your iPhone from slipping out of your grasp. Featured in the top-middle of the case is of course the Proporta™ logo.

When you flip the case over and have a look inside it, you notice that instead of it being totally black, the whole of the inside is a light gray which offsets the black really well. Because of this, the featured areas like the volume rockers and camera now stand out, showing the gray mixing beautifully with the black.

If you look closely at the inside of this case there is a set of what look like Roman numerals that read; “III/III/MDCCCXLVII”, these translate to the production number of the case.

You can also see two holes featured in the lower half of the case, these act as vents allowing air to get in to the case, stopping it from becoming a suction cup against the glossy black rear housing of your iPhone.

One thing that stands out with this case is the way it covers the featured areas, in most cases, completely. If you take the volume rocker for example, it is completely covered by the case, but works perfectly as if it wasn’t even there. Again you can see the gray blending into the black around the buttons. The power button is also covered completely, leaving only the headphone jack, silent switch and the very base with the speakers and dock open.

I will now hand over to Proporta to give you some very exciting and important news concerning this case:

It’s not very often we get excited about accessories, it’s all usually phones, phones, phones but one of the biggest gripes we have in our house is the number of cables we need to charge my families phones as well as all of mine (including those which are being used for hardware reviews or software testing).

As well as these things, I also have items such as my iPod and other USB mini devices to charge as well. I’d ideally like to go charge my most commonly used handset in the easiest way possible, perhaps with some wireless charging solution like the Palm Pre has with it’s Touchstone.

What I need is a nice station which can take care of all of that and only use up the one wall socket.
