Nielsen recently released their report on Smartphone marketshare statistics, with Android riding high, at the no.1 position.

ComScore have now released the actual numbers, Android 31.2% of the market, Blackberry at 30.4% and Apple’s iOS on 24.7%.

These numbers were collected before the Verizon iPhone, so we don’t know how dramatically that affected the market, but Android had a very good lead.

O2 are going above and beyond just selling phones and expecting you to know how to use them by providing a new service for everyone called O2 Guru TV.

The channel is found on the O2 Youtube channel and is provided as a source of information related to mobile phones, and how to get the best use out of them.

Each video on the new up-and-coming channel is well filmed, with a clear and professional presenter. The O2 Videos are each dedicated to a specific function on a specific handset that the carrier carries and right now there are 38 videos, ranging from setting up wifi on an Android handset to getting emails on an HD7. The concept is to “ask an O2 Guru“.

We think this is a great free resource being offered by O2 as not everybody is as tech savvy as us, and even for mobile phone geeks sometimes when moving between platforms even the most simple tasks can be baffling.

We understand that the new service doesn’t stop at 38 videos. In the upcoming weeks O2 will be adding hundreds of new videos that reflect the most common issues and trends for mobile phone users.

O2 gurus have been in the shops for some time now and we should all hope to find a guru in most stores nationwide by the end of the year.

Sony is doing a lot of brand cross overs atm, which isn’t a bad thing if you fancy yourself a playstation phone or perhaps NEX phone, whatever next.

There’s also an 8.1MP camera on the back and two colour options, blue and silver.

The handset is pretty large but incredibly thin at 8.2mm.

Some brilliant Publicity here for Nokia with one of the most interesting Virals I’ve ever seen.

The Finnish giants got together with Wallace and Gromit’s creators Aardman to create a Record breaking stop motion video using only a Nokia N8, a special CellScope microscope and lots of tiny figures. The figures were created using a special 3D printer.

There’s no doubting the quality of photos that its 12MP camera, the imagery here is fantastic.

Aardman’s stop-motion video, called “Dot,” is extremely cute and is a bit like a basic 2D / 3D platformer. Not to much a story but a great technical demo.

The little figurine, (50 of them were made, measuring 8.89mm tall), is chased in the almost Mario-like platform world made from fabric.

It’s entered Aardman into the Guinness Book of World Records.

So RIM has been a little slow to the party, but that can be excused when they have been hard at work making their newest handset, the Blackberry Torch, something different from their existing handsets, and it certainly will turn heads.

The Torch as you know is a slider based design, a large fully featured QWERTY keyboard sat behind a large capacitive touchscreen. Wi-Fi and 3G are also a given but that isn’t what been getting Blackberry fans excited, it’s the launch of Blackberry OS 6 which reworks RIM’s tried and tested simplistic OS and has been well received by Blackberry fans.

This week the mobile wars has started to get even more interesting as Microsoft begin to gain momentum with it’s all or nothing approach to refocusing its mobile arm.

To start they have just revealed a total of no less than 5 initial manufacturers to launch WP7S handsets for launch, Greg Sullivan announced today the confirmed hardware partners. HTC are there, as are Samsung, LG, Asus and Dell. One of the launch devices is a QWERTY slider and there’ll apparently be five handsets from each one of these manufacturers by the end of 2010.

During a chat with “LG Pacific” Greg commented on the opposition:

We will offer the best aspects of Android and the best of the iPhone, giving users the flexibility of different form factors, but with the rigidity of apps that are guaranteed to work on every device that is out there. By the time we will launch, we won’t have to worry about stealing customers from other operating systems, there will a new wave of smartphone users to embrace for us to still be successful

Now at this point you may think Microsoft are easily the weakest int he game, but with the folding of the Kin project and the backing of the world largest software company they certainly know how to turn things around (just look as Windows 7).

There are talks that th first handsets will ship with Qualcomm’s snapdragon chips running at 1.5Ghz, which is dual core, proper multitasking. Interested yet?

You’d be excused for thinking that Microsoft are not doing well in the entire software / mobile phone world with Apple stealing the limelight at every possibly opportunity however yesterday they posted 22% increase in revenue on the same quarter this time last year.

This quarter’s record revenue reflects the breadth of our offerings and our continued product momentum,”

said Peter Klein, chief financial officer.

The revenue growth, combined with our ongoing cost discipline, helped us achieve another quarter of margin expansion

Things have never looked better at Redmond.

Mobile Evangelism

There is also talk that Bullmer is taking a unique approach at breeding on the ground real world users, and quickly and organically creating a large and diverse application library.

All 90,000 Microsoft employees will be given a Windows Phone 7 Series mobile phone before launch day, totally free of charge. The idea is viral is best and just word of mouth and general brand awareness will lead to an increase in sales.

There could be something in this.

However a few strings are attached, yesterday a memo was leaked from mobile chief Andy Lees which sets out Redmond’s expectations that employees should “evangelize” the product at every single opportunity, setting aside spare time before launch to develop apps. It’s not compulsory, but they’d really appreciate it. And I think that may work, after all they really appreciate their jobs too.

Interesting to say the least.

Motorola have had it hard with stiff competition over the last few months and years and this is beginning to show with carrier support for what are great looking handsets.

This particular mobile phone:

That’s a pretty decent set of specs, but would you choose this over the HTC Desire, as already older handsets like the Desire have almost 300 Mhz on this and a similar spec package to suit.In fact the Desire would still be my no.1. handset, some 6 months after it was released.

If Moto want to stay current they need to play the CPU race like manufacturers did with PC’s some 10 years ago. People want speed, speed = higher numbers, regardless of how shiny or fancy your mobiles casing is, if it doesn’t have a cpu at least as fast as the main competitor’s then you’ve already lost the fight before it’s started.
