Ice Cream Sandwich is already ported to the Nexus S, and now the whole Android world wants to know which handset is next.

Officially different manufacturers are saying different things. ASUS said their “aim is to bring the latest Android update to the Eee Pad Series.” Motorola’s Droid RAZR, Droid Bionic, and XOOM are definitely getting the update due to their official Google phone statuses and any new devices with decent specs are likely to come shipped with ICS provided it’s at least 6 weeks after the launch of the Nexus (as that’s when the source goes live).

The Samsung Galaxy S is now capable of running an ICS port from XDA. It is Alpha though and experimental so don’t use it on your daily.

XDA members galnet and lttldvl, are well-known MIUI developers, and are helping to port to the Samsung Galaxy S, stating that they’re “taking a break from MIUI over the weekend” and “thought they’d work on trying to port ICS over to the SGS.” This is the biggest ROM hackers challenge for 2011 over at XDA, and a successful port would bring geek fame so we wish them luck.

Now when can we expect a port on our Desire, G2, Atrix, SGS2 etc…?

Thanks to success of Android Microsoft are doing pretty well. Yes you read that right, Microsoft profit when Google sell one of a large number of Android handsets. Howso?

Well Microsoft actually own a number of patents that are used within the Android OS, and rather than just steal and sue as some other mobile phone manufacturers may do, Google do things the professional way and pay their dues. This works on many levels, as Microsoft see Android as a partnership netting them 4 million (nearly £284 million) this year alone.

This helps keep competition healthy and technology moving.

More important, today’s announcement means that companies accounting for over half of all Android devices have now entered into patent license agreements with Microsoft.

This goes a long way to explaining why there is very little negativity between the two software manufacturers.

Google has purchased 1,023 patents from IBM on August 17th, a strategy aimed at strengthening their defense in the long-fought patent war with Apple and Microsoft.

These patents add to the pile of those acquired from the 1,030 purchased from IBM in July and over 17,000 patents that are part of the .5 billion deal that bought Motorola.

Jim Prosser, Google spokesperson made no mention financials or terms for the new patents and IBM, however Google makes no bones that the strategy is to fight the “hostile, organized campaign” against the free, open-source Android OS.

Google just arn’t going to sit down and let the Apple lawyers beat up their OEM supporters, lets hope the iPhone 5 doesn’t features anything from the mountain of now Google owned patents.

October will be a busy month for Google’s Lawyers no doubt.

Google announced Google Wallet a few months ago, an NFC-based payment system ready to work with Ice Cream Sandwhich.

Today, Techcrunch has just released an image of some internal documentation indicating an official launch for the service for today, September the 19th.

Google Wallet, which has already been demonstrated to work on a Nexus S 4G to purchase pants from American Eagle, is hoped to introduce NFC payments to mainstream consumers, much like the NFC aspects of the Barclaycard contactless payment system in the UK.

Google’s grand plan is that your Android phone will become your new wallet, this is likely to also be included as a feature of the next iPhone, the iPhone 5.

Tthe launch of Google Wallet today will also align itself with the start of the NFC World Congress in France. Which intends to further the development of NFC markets.

At Google I/O 2011, Android showed a few new screens from the new Android Market app for Android phones.

The principle aim of the new Android Market UI is to help people find apps and for developers to promote their apps.

There will be new categories and sections within the Market including Top Lists (much like MyreatAndroid.com’s Top Android Apps lists) Trending apps with the return and redesign of Top Paid and Top Free.

We think the new UI is more eye-catching with more colors and clearer graphics. There is almost a Windows Pone 7 appeal to it.

A nice new feature is that the related apps section will be split up into two lists now, apps that people tend to view and apps then people tend to install.

Developers who roll out multiple products will also be rewarded with a new Developer Spotlight which will feature particular developers.

The file limit for apps has been raised to 4GB making new opportunities possible on the platform.

Android Open Accessory API
Something I’ve always secretly hoped for, and am surprised yet delighted to see brought up is advanced USB (and other bus) accessory support for Android Mobile Phones. Image being able to plug your 1TB harddisk into your phone’s USB port, the concept may not be far from fruition.

Google wants a world where accessories work with all Android devices, regardless of manufacturer.

To ensure their vision happened Google is creating the Android Open Accessory API, which will allow universal accessory compatibility.

One example given is

“having an exercise bike recognize your phone and launch a corresponding workout app automatically.

The program is completely open with no fees. To illustrate the point on stage, stage lights are controlled from the Xoom. Google is said to already be partnering with LED lighting manufacturers, and lights and switches will be available by the end of the year. On stage they also demonstrated the use of an box 360 controller being used for mobile gaming.

Project Tungsten
Think of this as an Android at Home portal. The ability to connect to your hi-fi / amp and control your home theater systemfrom your phone. This project will completely open to developers, again for free, yet there are already apps and hardware that have this functionality, yet just not officially supported or marketed by Android.

Xoom Update
The microsoft Xoom, the first of the official licensed Android tablets is to receive an update to Honeycomb (3.1), this will be rolling out automatically OTA.

It will give the ability to resize widgets that aren’t designed for the platform, and app widgets can be updated with just a few lines of XML.

The camera is now able to track faces with the camera, and if two people are in the frame at the same time, the Xoom can tell which person is talking within the conversation and will zoom in on them, funky stuff.

Google have also announced that many of features of Honeycomb will be included in Ice Cream Sandwich the new codename for 2.4, which will bring these new features to mobile phones also.

Another fantastic addition which was demoed at the event was USB Host support for non-native USB devices, including an Xbox controller for gaming (see AOAA above).

Android Market Movie Rentals
As mentioned earlier for .99 and up (the majority really costing about 3.99 though) you can rent a movie directly from the market and stream it to your device.

The way it works is pretty simple: you have 30 days to begin the movie, and once started watching you have 24 hours to watch it fully. This should be fine for most movies to be honest.

Another sweet (spotify inspired) feature is that you can also “pin” movie rentals. This is basically offline playlists, or offline viewing, perfect for flights etc. This service will also cross platforms but not just you can rent it on your phone, watch some of it on your Xoom, and finish it on your desktop. Inspired stuff indeed.

Google Music
Google Music will be basically a cloud music storage system, capable of storing your legal downloads and rips ready to be streamed back to you on whatever device.

The service will import your iTunes collection (or other music software lists), complete with playlists and album info, and upload it to Google’s servers. Playlists can also be created and edited on your Android device.

Music will be cached once played to the device used or can be queued for offline listening as well.

Google Device Updates
Google showed their commitment to updating devices to reduce fragmentation in the industry.

They are creating an update team that will create and enforce guidelines about devices receiving updates to manufacturers and carriers.

Verizon, Sprint, T-Mobile, and AT&T, as well as HTC, Samsung, Sony Ericsson, LG, Vodfone, Motorola are all the targets and the team promises that all devices (depending on hardware) will now be assured to receive the latest updates for 18 months after the device’s release, and that includes who version numbers (or names in this case).

The Android Market will no longer be restricted to just apps in the coming months as google have announced they will soon be making films available to download.

Movies will start from just .99 and will be available across all devices using Android 2.2 or above (phones and tablets).

The functionality was hinted at on a recent episode of Fringe where very (un)subtly Walter downloaded a movie named Zoom on his Xoom tablet.

This appears to be US-only at the moment, as does Google Music. However we’re sure that deals are being discussed with LoveFilm et al to provide the service to UK customers.

We’ve also added Movies for rent to Android Market. You can choose to rent from thousands of movies starting at .99 and have them available across your Android devices—rent a movie on your home computer, and it’ll be available for viewing on your tablet or phone. You can rent from Android Market on the web today, and we’ll be rolling out an update to Verizon XOOM customers beginning today. We’ll start rolling out the update to Android 2.2 and above devices in the coming weeks.
