The Samsung Galaxy Ace was a popular mid-range handset released earlier this year and had a good upgrade history all the way to Gingerbread.

A new version, dubbed the plus (+) will ship internationally in the early part of this year with upgraded specs.

In all likelyhood the device will see CPU and RAM improvements taking it up to the new milestone for mid-range of dual core 1GHZ with half a gig of ram, but to be honest it’s very doubtful it will see ICS Android 4.0 on its release.

This certainly won’t be a Galaxy S III competitor, but may be fine for the less tech competitive.

Samsung has announced that they are going to release an update for the international version of the Galaxy S II to increase the size of icons on the home screen.

An unorthodox move indeed, to increase the icon sizes by 30% but hey, they must have done the research.

Another feature of the update is the “System Update Widget” that brings firmware-over-the-air and allows instant access to updated phone software, much in the same way as Apps are currently updated.

Article Content:

Much like the XPERIA series for Sony Ericsson, ‘Galaxy’ has become Samsung’s leading brand in the mobile space for 2010. This year, a legion of additional handset siblings from luxury to entry level round out the ‘Galaxy Family’, including a tablet sequel and a revamp of the best-selling Samsung Galaxy S. Let’s take a look!

Samsung Galaxy S II – Looking like little more than a retread of the original at first glance, the Galaxy S II is actually packed to the gills with new features. Picking it up off the stand was the first shock, the device is crazy light at only grams, and a bewildering 8.49mm thin.

Despite these seemingly fragile vital statistics the S II looks every bit the luxury device, with impressive build quality and a slightly more angular styling than the curvy Galaxy S.

Samsung is also stepping things up under the bonnet, with a 1.2GHz dual core processor and 1GB of RAM, whilst an 8-megapixel camera capable of full HD video capture is on the back.

The thinness of the phone is apparently in no small part down to the new Super AMOLED Plus technology, making the Galaxy S II’s expansive 4.3-inch display amazingly bright, with colours popping and little to no pixellation to the naked eye. Video content looked frankly amazing with vivid hues and rich, deep blacks.

Not content with just being a technical marvel on the multimedia front, the Galaxy S II also contains Near Field Communications gadgetry inside, meaning that micro-payments can be performed at participating shops and businesses, just by waving your handset in the general vicinity of a reader! Potentially as big as the shift from paper to plastic, it’s great to see a new handset like the Galaxy S II already future-proofing itself by being packed with NFC.

We were pleasantly surprised with how much of an evolution over the original Galaxy S this device was, the Samsung Galaxy S II is completely deserving of its Roman numeral suffix and will be ready to hit stores around April.

We look forward to it!

Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 – Destined to stand alongside rather than replace the Galaxy Tab but sporting a wealth of changes both cosmetic and core, the Galaxy Tab 10.1 is a strong entry amongst the new breed of tablet devices.

Running on Android 3.0 and powered by an NVIDIA Tegra 2 chip, the specs are the spitting image of a certain LG Optimus Pad, but the Tab 10.1 seemed a little more luxurious than both the competition and its forebear. The larger screen gives the user interface room to breathe, with navigation intuitive and the degree of personalisation very extensive.

Running on Google’s tablet-tuned Honeycomb version of Android made it very familiar, and a lack of Samsung-specific customisation meant that the user experience was – whilst a good one – remarkably similar to other tablet entrants on the show floor.

The addition of a SIM slot for 3G connectivity means more practical portability as well as Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 deals on the market, judging by the price tag of the 7-inch original, it could certainly do with pay monthly subsidising.

A powerful entrant in the tablet race and certainly one to watch this Q2…

Samsung Galaxy Family (Samsung Galaxy Gio, Samsung Galaxy Ace, Samsung Galaxy Fit, Samsung Galaxy mini) – A barrage of bargain handsets to suit all pockets now, as the Samsung Galaxy Family introduces us to a quartet of quality Android phones.

Each one delivers the core smartphone experience without us having to smash open our piggy bank, so it’s safe to say that these will be frequenting prepay waters predominantly…

The Samsung Galaxy Ace is nearer the top end of the line-up, and is quite up to the minute by running on Android version 2.2, meaning the lion’s share of Google goodness is present and correct from Google Maps navigation to Gmail.

The Galaxy Ace (above) has an impressive 5-megapixel camera with LED flash, and sports a 3.5-inch touchscreen. Expected to come in at only around £20 per month on contract for a free handset, the Ace could be the card up Samsung’s sleeve when it’s released early next month.

The Galaxy Gio is a tad smaller, but that’s not to say that Samsung have scrimped on specs…because they haven’t. Cut down a tad to a 3.2-inch display and 3-megapixel camera, the Galaxy mini is still expected to do great numbers upon its release next month, and will be part of Samsung’s sub-£100 prepay push come March.

The Galaxy Fit and Galaxy mini are the other dynamic duo, also running on Android 2.2 and sporting an array of neat features. The Samsung Galaxy Fit is surprisingly sturdy for an entry-level device, and has a 3.3-inch touch display alongside a 5-megapixel camera, wi-fi and microSD cart slot. The Samsung Galaxy mini is last but certainly not least, with a 3-megapixel camera and 3.1-inch touchscreen to boot.

All four boast new handsets quad-band, GPS, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, so are pretty complete as handsets go. A great selection, and proof that Samsung are equally as eager to dominate the mid-range masses as they are the top-end smartphone market.

It’s been that kind of mentality that has enabled them to get where they are now, a stronger and more dominant position over the UK mobile landscape, thanks in no small part to Android. Their stand at MWC 2011 was immense, and it was very telling that they occupied the position on the show floor held by Nokia just two years earlier…how times have changed.

———————

Just as we were wondering what on Earth (or in space, ha!) happened to the Samsung Spica, the other Android handset available from the Korean phone maker, it’s popped up on T-Mobile’s UK site as the Samsung Galaxy Portal.

Available for free from £23 per month on an 18 month contract, the Galaxy Portal offers a 3.2 megapixel autofocus camera, media player with support for DivX and Mp3 formats, 16GB of storage (via microSD), as well as access to the Android Market and over 20,000 apps.

Unfortunately the Portal is still sporting the v1.5 ‘Cupcake’ build meaning that it doesn’t pack some of the impressive features of later Android phones, but Samsung has promised to issue software upgrades to both the Galaxy and the i5700/Galaxy Portal next month, making this Google-powered blower a bit of a bargain!

So if you want to make a tentative step into another dimension – namely one filled with customisable homescreens, decent mobile internet and e-mail connectivity – then the Samsung Galaxy Portal is the phone to take you there.
