Usually electronics are manufactured in the far east, whether it be Korea or China, especially for Apple with the majority of their iPhones being created in Foxxconn, in China.

However a new report suggests that the production of Apple’s current mobile processors (The A5) have moved to the United States.

The chips are apparently being manufactured in a new 1.6 million square foot Samsung factory located in Austin, Texas. The factory, owned by Samsung, is the size of nine football fields reached full production capacity earlier this month, and was expanded to manufacture logic chips.

Although this will make Samsung shareholders happy, it is still bitter sweet as they have lost the contract to manufacture the next-generation A6 chips which will instead be manufactured by Taiwan-based chip maker TSMC.

Sony Ericsson XPERIA Play deals are now listed via BuyMobilePhones.net as being available for pre-order.

The UK’s big four carriers are listed – O2, Orange, Vodafone and T-Mobile, but nothing for Three or Virgin as yet. The prices for the handset range from FREE on a fairly steep £35 per month package, all the way up to a £249.99 handset cost on the various contracts available, too numerous to list here.

Meanwhile, Expansys.com lists the handset at £539.99 SIM-free and have pencilled in the availability date as the 31st March 2011, so a maximum of just over 6 weeks to wait!

The Sony Ericsson XPERIA Play has to be one of the most poorly kept secrets since, well the iPhone 4, and we wonder if testing the public reactions in some way is due to a little hesitancy or insecurity on behalf of Sony themselves.

Sony stopped short of allowing the subsidiary Sony Ericsson to call it the ‘PSP Phone’ or similar, settling for a slightly less commital ‘PlayStation Certified’ stamp of approval, which only covers the XPERIA Play’s hardware setup, rather than gaming credentials.

The jury’s still out on whether the XPERIA Play will really do justice to the PlayStation brand, although Sony Computer Entertainment CEO Kazuo Hirai was there to show support for the handset when he appeared onstage at the MWC 2011 on Sunday night during the official reveal.

The XPERIA Play packs a 1Ghz Qualcomm Scorpion ARMv7 processor (an interesting choice given the profusion of multi-core mobiles coming this year), has 400MB RAM, a 4″ capacitive touch screen running at 854 x 640 pixels, and runs on Android 2.3 or ‘Gingerbread’.

Onboard storage comes via an included 8GB MicroSD, expandable to 32GB. The handset can also record 720p video and DLNA will stream it to compatible televisions. In addition to a 5MP camera at the rear, a 2MP front facing camera is on hand to provide video calling functionality for all you Skype heads out there.

The controller itself has the familiar four button directional pad, triangle/circle/cross/square buttons as well as L and R shoulder buttons, instantly familiar to the Playstation range. Some gamers earlier bemoaned the lack of analogue sticks, but it so happens that the slightly mysterious touch interface in the middle will be usable in lieu, giving fans of FPS games like genre stalwarts Call of Duty and Killzone something to sleep well on.

Oh yeah and before we forget, it’s also a phone! You know, to call people on, although we can’t imagine that serious gamers will want to be disturbed when they’re right in the middle of a serious multiplayer firefight. Good luck making that call!

Check out Omio’s deals page where you can find the best offers on the Sony Ericsson XPERIA Play.

LG’s latest Tegra 2 wielding uber-handset the Optimus 2X set tongues wagging at CES 2011 with the prospect of not one, but two 1Ghz cores. Soon after the reveal, Omio reported that Expansys had set a date and price for SIM-free pre-order. Unfortunately the release date has been put back by a month to 21st March 2011, so you will have to wait an extra 40,320 minutes to get your sweaty hands on one.

At one Queen’s head short of a monkey, the (fairly justified) £499 SIM-free pricetag left wallets flapping and a few teeth gnashing. However, we are happy to announce that you can now pre-order the phone for FREE on contract with Vodaphone from Expansys.com. Keep glued to Omio’s Deals pages for further price plans. Currently, a 24 month contract on Vodaphone will be £30.65 p/m, giving you 300 cross-network minutes. Or for £35.75 p/m you can double this to 600 minutes. An 18 month option is available for £35.75 p/m with the lower 300 minutes allowance. All of the available contracts have unlimited texts and 500MB data allowance.

The prospect of an Android handset sporting the processing power usually found in laptops was an HD afficionado’s wet dream. Its just… so… FAST! The handset is fully 1080p capable, both for recording and playback of video, and gaming is likely to be a dream. To make the most of the output resolution, the built in DLNA means that content can be effortlessly streamed over the air to compatible screens and hardware. Now not even a dusty moth-ridden wallet can get in the way of ordering a handset so powerful, it could make Chuck Norris weep.

Keep checking back at Omio’s Deals page for more deals and tariffs on the LG Optimus 2x.

It’s no longer just smartphone fans on top-end contracts that are getting offered free stuff, as Orange have rolled out a series of top-up perks to benefit their prepay users.

Offering greater value for money to their animal-themed tariffs, Orange shoppers will get rewards for topping up as little as a fiver, as well as lower call rates and free international calling minutes depending on the package.

Music loving Monkey tariff users can add to the unlimited free music access by snagging a daily internet pass and free UK texts for adding at least £5 to their credit, whilst chatty Canary tariff owners get 100 more free evening and weekend texts when they add a tenner onto their account, on top of the 100 call minutes they already receive.

The intriguingly-spelled Racoon tariff keeps things easy – allowing prepay owners to enjoy cheap calls as the per minute cost falls to just 12p, whilst intrepid Camel PAYG customers can get free international minutes from just topping up.

On top of all the above, an offer of Unlimited Text bundle for a £5 top-up is extended to Dolphin and Monkey PAYG package owners, taking them slowly but subtly into pay monthly territory…

Pippa Dunn, Vice President of Orange Propositions said:

“We have enhanced our Pay As You Go animal packages to ensure we meet our customers’ changing needs and continuously provide good value. We are committed to offering customers packages that are tailored to their specific lifestyles – from music to free international calls.”

Great to the prepay customers getting a similar level of love as contact owners on Orange. Other networks would do well to follow suit…

Sometimes when a new handset is released, it is instantly clear where it fits into that particular manufacturer’s line-up of existing handsets, but every once in a while a new product is announced that, whilst being a fine device in its own right, seems to be nothing more than a filler handset, just another variation on an existing phone. The Samsung S5620 Monte is a device that fits into this category. I mean, it is indeed a fine handset, with an impressive array of features, but I do wonder just who it will appeal to, what is the market segment it is aimed at? Perhaps, though, the S5620 isn’t designed to attract a specific type of user, and will instead offer a broad appeal across the market. It will be interesting to see just where this phone sits when it is released.

As I said, the feature setup on the handset is very good, with a solid if not spectacular line-up. Very lightweight, at just 92g, the Samsung Monte measures in at a comfortable 109 x 54 x 12.5mm, very much among the norm for a mid range device. With a full touch enabled display, using capacitive technology, the Monte delivers a TFT screen measuring in at a good 3.0 inches, supporting up to 256,000 colours and with a pixel resolution of 240 x 400. The handset runs on the proprietary Samsung TouchWiz user interface, which is a simple, icon driven menu system that makes navigation simple for even the newest of mobile phone users. The device has a built in accelerometer for auto display rotation, and there is a turn to mute option included too, which handily allows you to mute incoming calls by simply flipping the phone over. Another nice inclusion is the Smart Unlock option, which allows you to unlock the phone and instantly launch a chosen application by simply ‘drawing’ a pre selected shape on your phone’s display. So for example, drawing an ‘M’ could launch the music player, or an ‘S’ could launch the SMS feature, and so on.

It’s good to see on a mid range device the inclusion of a GPS receiver, enabling the phone to work as a personal navigation device by using the ever popular Google Maps application, with the Samsung Monte shipping with Google Maps 3.0. The GPS receiver also works with the built in 3.2 Megapixel camera, allowing you to add location information to the digital data on captured images, which allows people to see the location images were captured if you enable this on photos you upload to the web. As well as offering Geotagging, the camera on the Monte supports fixed focus, and also smile detection. Video recording is enabled too, allowing video clips to be captured at an acceptable 15 fps, at QVGA resolution, which whilst a bit choppy and blocky would still view ok if uploaded to the web. Social networking integration on the Monte follows in the footsteps of many recent handsets from Samsung, offering live updates that can be set to be delivered direct to the main standby screen on the phone. This option can be activated from a variety of the most popular social networking sites.

Click here to view the embedded video.

The S5620 Monte includes a full media player, with support for multiple music and video formats. Memory on the handset is a rather impressive 227MB internal, which can be expanded with the addition of a MicroSD memory card, with the Monte supporting cards up to 16GB in size. To enhance the music listening capabilities, the Monte includes a 3.5mm audio output jack, plus includes support for DNSe for an improved sound quality. There is a stereo FM radio with RDS included on the phone, and we also find Bluetooth 2.1, which allows for stereo audio streaming to a compatible wireless headset.

Messaging and web browsing are well catered for on the Monte, with support for Palringo instant messaging already installed on the device, plus the usual email facilities found on most Samsung devices, which includes support for push email and multiple account setup. There is a full web browser on the handset, which works well with most websites, and data connectivity is handled via 3G+ Mobile Broadband, backed up by GPRS, EDGE, and there is also WiFi 802.11b/g too.

Overall the Samsung S5620 Monte is a smart looking device, which will offer a broad appeal to a wide variety of users. Available in Q2 2010, the Monte will be available on both Prepay and contract, and given the expected selling press offers very good value indeed.

Following in the footsteps of the Xperia X1 and X2, Sony Ericsson have announced the forthcoming release of the Aspen, the third Windows Mobile powered device from the Swedish/Japanese manufacturer. The device is expected to release during Q2 2010, and in some markets will also be known as the Sony Ericsson Faith. Aimed at the business market, the Aspen packs in a whole host of top end features designed to keep you in touch on the go.

The Aspen comes under the now familiar Greenheart banner, a range of handsets from Sony Ericsson that deliver top end mobile technology utilising eco friendly materials. This means the majority of the device is constructed from recycled material, whilst the packaging itself is kept to an absolute minimum. Also, you will not find a manual in the box; this will be stored on the phone in .pdf format. A useful tip for this is when you get your phone, copy the .pdf file to your PC, because if you need to access the manual and your phone is not working, it can be a bit of a pain having to hunt for the manual online. Another element of the Greenheart ethos is using waterborne paint on the handset, which has better environmental credentials.

Click here to view the embedded video.

The Sony Ericsson Aspen is a candybar style device, looking similar in design to a traditional BlackBerry, or Nokia E71. There is a full, four row, QWERTY keyboard on the handset, above which sit the menu Navi Key, soft option keys and call send/end keys. The display on the device is a resistive touchscreen, TFT, measuring 2.4 inches across and supporting up to 16 million colours. The fact that the QVGA display is touchscreen is a real bonus, allowing you to interact with the device either via the keypad or directly through the screen, and as the screen is a resistive display, it will work with a stylus and there is support for handwriting recognition included. As with most modern phones, the display has an auto rotate feature, which comes into its own when using the device for web browsing, and the user interface includes support for the Sony Ericsson panels, found previously on the X1 and X2.

The Aspen is a well connected phone, with quad band GSM support for solid worldwide coverage. Data transfer on the phone is handled via HSPA, for mobile broadband speed downloads and uploads on the phone, plus there is also support for WiFi 802.11b/g. This is all backed up with Class 10 EDGE and GPRS, and the device also supports Bluetooth 2.1, with A2DP. For connecting to a PC, the handset uses a Micro USB connector, and onboard storage sits at 100MB. This can be expanded via MicroSD memory cards, with the Aspen able to handle up to 16GB. The basic retail package ships with a 4GB memory card.

All the major messaging suites are supported on the Aspen, to further enhance the business credentials of this device. As well as email and push email, there is support for instant messaging, as well as onboard applications for Skype, YouTube, Facebook and Twitter. The Aspen also includes Pocket Office, allowing you to view a variety of office documents on the phone, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote and .pdf files. But the Aspen isn’t all work, and as we’d hope for on a high spec handset, there is a full media player included, with support for WMA, MP3 and AAC audio files, plus WMV, MP4, H.264 and H.263 video files, and Sony Ericsson have also included a stereo FM radio with RDS support.

Imaging on the handset is capably managed by a point ‘n’ shoot 3.2 Megapixel camera, which has support for smart contrast, and is also enabled for video recording. A GPS receiver is built into the phone, with support for aGPS included, and the device will ship with Google Maps pre-installed.

All round the Sony Ericsson Aspen is a solid device, and has a lot to offer the business user on the move. But more than that, the device would be equally comfortable for someone who likes to keep in touch via social networking and email, all services well supported on the device. Whether the Aspen has enough to hold some of the limelight for itself against some of the handset we expect to be announced this month, though, remains to be seen.

Ever since the legendary Nokia 6310i, the 6000 range of handsets from Nokia have produced some of the most enduring and immensely popular devices that have ever been sold in the mobile phone industry. The 6000 series is responsible for the soap bar styled Nokia 6600, upgrade to the market leading smartphone of the time, the Nokia 7650. As well as other popular Symbian based devices, the 6000 series also brought to market some top selling S40 based devices, including the Nokia 6230, Nokia 6300 and now one of the most recent, the Nokia 6303. The 6303 has proven to be a worthy successor to the 6300, one of the most popular devices of all time, and now Nokia have released a new version, the 6303i Classic. As with previous ‘i’ upgrades, the 6303i just offers a slight tweaking of the basic components of the device, without compromising anything that served to make the original a popular choice.

The main upgrades with the 6303i Classic revolve around memory. So the device now offers an internal capacity of 55MB instead of 17MB, and is capable of officially handling memory cards up to 8GB in size, instead of the previous 4GB. You will also find in the box that the device now ships with a 2GB card, instead of a 1GB card as previous. Other than that the 6303i Classic still offers the familiar line up of features that have made the 6303 one of the top selling handsets of recent times. The fact that it can be purchased for such a good price on Prepay, generally around the £100 price point, is certainly a contributing reason to the device’s success. But that should not serve as a pointer to belittle the handset, what it offers compared to the price you pay is very good value indeed.

To go through the main features of this device, then, the Nokia 6303i Classic comes with a very good Point ‘n’ Shoot 3.2 Megapixel camera, with autofocus support and a dual LED flash. The device is also enabled for video recording, although truth be known, the resulting quality isn’t that good, and is of a standard that would work for MMS at best. It certainly wouldn’t look great if uploaded to any social media sites or YouTube. But this is a minor point, in the grand scheme of things, and you wouldn’t be buying the 6303i if video recording capability was important to you. The 6303i however does have some other redeeming features that will be of interest to the majority of mobile phone users. And chief amongst these is a very impressive battery life. Nowadays, with the popularity of smartphones, it is not uncommon to need to charge your phone on a daily basis, if not twice a day in some instances. The Nokia 6303i Classic in comparison offers a much better battery life, and almost re-introduces us to a modern mobile phone that will ‘last the distance’ if you go away for the weekend and leave your phone charger at home.

One feature that can take advantage of the excellent battery performance is the built in music player. The handset can offer a music playback time of up to 30 hours from a single charge, which is pretty good going and certainly amongst the best offered from a mobile phone. The music player on the phone is of a standard S40 look, with support for playlists which can be chosen from a pre selected list, or from personal lists created on the phone. Music can also be browsed via genre, album or artist. As well as a music player, the handset also has a built in stereo FM radio, with RDS support, and we also find Bluetooth 2.1 with A2DP for stereo audio streaming. For normal cable headphones the 6303i includes a 3.5mm audio output jack, allowing you to choose headphones more suited to your own personal comfort than standard supplied headphones tend to offer.

The 6303i Classic is exactly the same size and weight as the 6303, weighing in at just 96g, and sports the same size and type of display, TFT QVGA screen measuring 2.2 inches and supporting up to 16 million colours. All the standard colour variants of the 6303 will be included, as well as being available in White on Silver and Khaki on Gold variants. The Nokia 6303i Classic is expected to be available to market by the end of Q1, and should sell for the same price as the 6303 currently does.
