The Motorola Droid 2 has now been officially announced by Motorola and Verizon. The original Motorola Droid was a significant hit at the US market and show there were mobile phones that could compete with the iPhone and other rivals.

There has been many variations on the original Motorola Droid, such as the supersized Droid X, the GSM Milestone, Korean Motoroi and the European XT720, but now Motorola has finally decided to make the Droid 2, adding some new useful features. The Motorola Droid 2 will be exclusive to the Verizon CDMA network in the US.

At first sight, they look almost the same, except Motorola rearranged the front buttons and it is a bit thinner. As soon as you slide out the QWERTY-keyboard you will notice some differences: Motorola decided to make it easier for you and made the buttons bigger! They also removed the trackpad and replaced it with arrow control.

The Droid 2 runs the latest Android OS called Froyo, also known as Android 2.2, straight out of the box. This means improved performance and full support for Adobe Flash 10.1, the first ever phone to support this! This is an incredible feature for all of us who hate the question marks which comes with videos on pages other than YouTube. Even though Android 2.2 is quite new, it is still available to run the tons of apps made for Android 2.1, which means you can keep your old 2.1 apps if you’re replacing you’re old Android 2.1 phone.

One of the more unusual features that the Droid 2 brings is the 3G Mobile Hotspot, this allows the user to make their Droid a hotspot which allows up to 5 devices connected at the same time! This makes it much easier to use the Droids 3G network on your laptop when you’re travelling, and if you have a data plan, you don’t pay for it!

GPS is also of course included and lets you use Google Maps or a third-party satellite navigation application. The good thing with satellite navigators is that they probably won’t cost you anything, as long as you stay on satellite.

The phone is however quite heavy with its 169 grams and a phone measuring 116 x 61 x 14mm can also be hard to put in small pockets. The large 1400mAh battery gives you up to 9.5 hours talktime and 13 days standby time.

The phone is available for pre-order on Verizon Wireless this week, with delivery expected sometime in the 3rd quarter of this year. They will also be putting up a special R2D2 themed Droid 2 online, only in September. The price will be 9 with a new 2-year contract.

The phone is a highly useful upgrade since the original Droid. However, as the Droid 2 is a CDMA device it won’t be available for European networks, but you can be pretty sure they will release a GSM version.
