Despite spending most of Mobile World Congress hidden under a white cloth, looking like Michael Jackson’s dangling baby, the Puma Phone appeared as the Johnny-come-lately of 2010’s event.

Puma’s slightly shambolic drum roll didn’t entirely backfire however, as the shapely feature-handset they eventually revealed both looked and felt rather tasty.

Manufactured by French manufacturer Sagem, the Puma Phone sports a slender form factor, 2.8” TFT resistive touchscreen, enhanced 3G capabilities (but no WiFi), Assisted GPS– so the Puma Phone will handle all your basic needs.

Let’s face it though – it should come as no surprise that the Puma Phone is aimed squarely at the activity-set and where the Puma Phone perks up is the additional features of Bike Tracker, Run Tracker, Pedometer., Cool – turntable-style MP3 player and 3.5mm headphone jack.

A nice touch is the integrated solar panel – one of the emerging trends we’re going to see more of in the next few years.

Previously solar panels haven’t yet delivered the efficiency a heavy mobile phone user requires, however we were assured that each hour in the sun would yield 15 minutes talk-time or 2 hours music playback.

We’re doubtful as to the use of a feature in the UK’s cloudy climes, but kudos to Sagem  and Puma for pushing out a decent integrated solar-powered model, nonetheless.

The Puma Phone is set for a release in Europe come April – just in time for the FIFA World Cup!
