The Samsung Jét was said to be ”Smarter than a Smartphone”. However, many people have been complaining about the OS (operating system) of the Jét. People are complaining about how hard it is to understand, the low support of java touch games and so on. But hold on, the saviour is close with the new project named Jetdroid.
It was said that Samsung were originally planning on putting the Android OS on the Samsung Jét, but then they started investigating in a new operating system called Bada, and so they released the Jét with their own OS called Touchwiz 2.0, instead of Google’s Android. All of this made Samsung Jét users over the world disappointed at Samsung, and so the project started.
Jetdroid was made sometime in the end of 2009 to port the world-famous operating system Android to the phone. They have modified Android systems made for other phones with the same processor types, but not least from a project called Andromnia, made for the Samsung Omnia II. In July this year they managed to get a “working”, but not complete kernel (central component of an OS). The project has now reached the state when they are trying to implement all the necessary, and unnecessary, features to the phone, including (but not limited to): All network features (including Bluetooth and wi-fi), Camera and motion sensor.
The site Darkforest Group have also tried helping the project by creating an own section only for Jetdroid, this is where most people get to know about the project. So far, more than a 100 people on the forum of Darkforest Group have downloaded the “new” OS. Now, many people look on the project with new hope glimmering in their eyes, which wasn’t the case when it started.
In the very beginning of the project, people had great hope in the project and supported it fully. However, after a while it seemed like the Jetdroid team was stuck, just waiting for a kernel from the project Andromnia. People started getting grumpy, saying it would fail, the hope was almost lost when the project Andromnia just failed, they just quit working on it. Now people have got the hope back a bit, but the project is far from finished. What developers need now are detailed schematics on the Samsung Jét which includes all signals it sends, to get this you need a kind of pass and login to a Samsung db which has everything. However these passes don’t go cheap, the price is about €200 for 1 month!
I really hope and think that Jetdroid could be something that more than 50% of jet users will use daily for calls, texting etc. and let’s all hope it’s not a flop like Andromnia. It’s hard to foretell the outcome of this project, it looks dark with features like call right now, but they keep implementing new, non-network based features all the time.
