Affordable Android-powered smartphones may well be ten a penny these days, but today’s announcement of the ZTE Kis at just £49.99 is enough to court the attention of our wallets.

An exclusive to Virgin Media at launch, the ZTE Kis delivers surprisingly substantial specs for the price, touting a 3.2-megapixel camera with 2x digital zoom, an 800Mhz processor and a 3.5-inch TFT capacitive display in a boxy 120g device.

Bolstering the value price point is a 2GB memory card that beefs up the slight on-board RAM, whilst Gingerbread offers (almost) unfettered access to the wealth of wares available on Google Play.

Despite a slightly…workmanlike design, the Kis offers itself up as a great gateway device to the world of apps and Android, with Virgin Media also offering its customers 1GB of free data for 12 months.

Jamie Heywood, director of mobile at Virgin Media waxed lyrical about the strength of the Kis as a prepay offering:

“We’re bundling in a huge amount of data to complement this Android handset for our PAYG customers. This is yet another example how Virgin Media is raising the bar in the mobile market because we know how much our customers love to be connected no matter where they are without worrying about expensive bills.”

The Kis launches today.
