Modern Smartphone sales have continued to rise, analyst firm Gartner reports, there has been almost 50% increase in the first quarter of 2010.

Carolina Milanesi, research vice president at Gartner, says:

“Android’s momentum continued into the first quarter of 2010, particularly in North America, where sales of Android-based phones increased 707% year-on-year.”

Microsoft is now down to retired 4th, with Google’s Android outperforming the Windows Mobile OS.

Last year Microsoft had a 10.2% share of the overall mobile phone market, this year it’s now at only 6.8%.

Android went from a 1.6% market share in 2009 to a 9.6% share.
